IBS Awareness Month

Posted by InControl Diapers Staff on 2022 Apr 5th

April is IBS Awareness Month. Do you or anyone you know suffer from IBS?

What Is It?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), also known as nervous bowel or spastic colon, affects millions of people across the world and occurs as a long-lasting group of symptoms including abdominal pain and a variety of problems with bowel movements. There are four types of IBS. They differ from each other depending on whether one has constipation, diarrhea, alternating constipation and diarrhea, or has other IBS symptoms without constipation or diarrhea. While it can have a serious impact on your life, IBS isn’t life-threatening and doesn’t put you at greater risk of developing diseases like colon cancer or ulcerative colitis. The symptoms of IBS can be reduced through various treatment plans.

Symptoms of IBS

IBS can be a long-term or even life-long illness. Typically, it is accompanied by diarrhea or constipation along with:

  • Abdominal cramps and pain
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • A swollen stomach
  • Bowel movements with mucus
  • Food intolerance
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Anxiety and depression

Causes of IBS

Experts are not sure what causes IBS, though its triggers are well known. IBS can be set off or worsened by certain foods, medicines, and emotional stress. Learning what triggers IBS is an important step in managing IBS.

Treating IBS

IBS can be managed and its symptoms can improve over time through a variety of treatments. These may include changing your diet, taking antispasmodic and antidepressant medications, or seeing a counselor. Some may need to change their work-life by working from home, changing their hours, or not working. In all cases, you should develop your treatment plan with your healthcare provider.
