Cerebral Palsy Support, You Are Not Alone!

At InControl Diapers we offer some of the best products available on the market today. We also like to provide support by not only offering assistance and suggestions regarding these products but also by providing information in other areas we believe people will find helpful, such as on certain financial assistance programs available to those living with incontinence. Today we are going to talk about Cerebral Palsy and the LEAF program.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

“Cerebral Palsy is considered a neurological disorder caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation that occurs while the child’s brain is under development. Cerebral Palsy primarily affects body movement and muscle coordination.”

Cerebral palsy's main characteristic is abnormal muscle growth and activity. The muscles around your bladder and bowel system are key when it comes to being able to suppress one’s need to use the washroom. When the muscles around your bladder are not strong enough or involuntary spasm it can be hard to control when you need to urinate. This could lead to not being able to control leaking when coughing or sneezing, or possibly not even feeling the need to go at all.

Living with incontinence comes with added costs. The Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy has a wonderful program called the “Life Emergency Action Fund” previously known as the “Life Enriching Activity Fund”.

The guidelines to the LEAF program have changed slightly with covid-19. The way you apply and what items are eligible for reimbursements have also changed slightly.

Some of the items that are eligible are:

  • Food/Food supplements (ie. Boost, Ensure)
  • Personal Protective Equipment (ie. gloves, face masks)
  • Sanitizing/disinfecting products (ie. wipes, spray)
  • Personal hygiene products/pharmacy supplies (ie. incontinence supplies, cleansing wipes)
  • Transportation costs (receipted transportation costs due to the pandemic)
