What is Urinary Incontinence?

Posted by Kevin on 2021 Apr 23rd

Urinary Incontinence is a term that describes any unintentional loss of urine be it accidental or involuntary from the bladder. Urinary incontinence is far more common than bowel incontinence and is further divided into the following sub types:

  • Functional Incontinence
  • Nocturnal Enuresis (Bedwetting)
  • Overactive Bladder
  • Overflow Incontinence
  • Stress Incontinence
  • Urge Incontinence
  • Mixed Incontinence
  • Total Incontinence
  • Pregnancy incontinence

Establishing the type of urinary incontinence a person is suffering from is important because the treatment of incontinence depends on knowing the cause. This becomes a lot easier once the type of incontinence has been diagnosed.

Treatment can vary greatly from one person to another, depending on the cause and its severity. This problem can often be treated with simple lifestyle changes but it may also need more invasive treatments including surgery. Unfortunately, even surgery may not be able to fix the problem in all persons. In this case, the doctor can prescribe treatments to ease the condition.
